Did Solomon pass away in God’s favor?

The Bible does not explicitly state whether King Solomon died in God’s favor or whether he fully repented before his death.

The Fall in His Later Years

  • Idolatry: In his old age, Solomon’s 700 wives and 300 concubines turned his heart away from God to worship foreign idols (such as Chemosh, Molech, and Ashtoreth), violating explicit commands in the Torah.
  • God’s Judgment: Because of this unfaithfulness, God declared that the kingdom of Israel would be torn away from Solomon’s lineage. However, God promised that this division would not happen during Solomon’s lifetime, out of faithfulness to his father, King David.

Differing Perspectives on His Eternal Standing

  • The Case for Repentance & Grace: Many theologians and readers believe Solomon was ultimately saved. They point to his authorship of the Book of Ecclesiastes (which many view as a reflection of regret and a return to the conclusion that fearing God is humanity’s chief duty) as well as God’s covenant promise in 2 Samuel 7:14-15 that even when Solomon sinned, God’s steadfast love would not depart from him.
  • The Case for Broken Fellowship / Damnation: Other early church writers (such as St. Augustine) and commentators view Solomon’s late-life idolatry as a severe spiritual collapse. Because the biblical text of 1 Kings 11 records no explicit, final repentance for Solomon—unlike his father David—some tradition and interpretation leave his ultimate spiritual state as a warning of moral compromise.

Was Solomon (God’s man of wisdom) saved in the end? He ends his life building shrines and idols to demonic gods according to the sway of his many pagan wives. See 1 Kings Ch. 11. There is no text on his repentance between 1 Kings 11:1-43 where he dies and his story ends. Thoughts?

King Solomon did not die in a state of unblemished favor with God, though interpretations of his ultimate spiritual standing vary.

The Decline: In his later years, Solomon’s many foreign wives turned his heart away from God, leading him to build high places and shrines for idols such as Chemosh, Molech, and Ashtoreth.

God’s Judgment: Because of this disobedience, God became angry and announced that the united kingdom would be torn away from his dynasty, though the judgment was delayed until after his death for the sake of his father, King David. God also raised up regional and internal adversaries (such as Jeroboam) against him.

End of Life and Salvation Debate: The Bible does not explicitly record a moment of repentance before Solomon died after a 40-year reign, leaving theologians divided:Some scholars and traditions view him as having died under divine discipline and disfavor (with some traditional interpretations even questioning his salvation).Other readers and theologians—pointing to his authorship of Ecclesiastes (with its concluding call to fear God) and God’s enduring covenant promise—believe he ultimately repented or remained within God’s grace.

Ecclesiastes is traditionally said to have been written by Solomon toward the end of his life. Scholarship rejects this but if you believe it, it basically confirms he repented.
