What comes after life on earth is a sequence involving physical death, an intermediate state or presence with God, a bodily resurrection, the final judgment, and ultimately the New Heavens and New Earth.
The progression described in Scripture unfolds through these key stages:
1. Immediate State After Death
- For Believers: The soul or spirit goes immediately into the presence of Christ (often called Paradise or heaven), while the physical body rests in the grave.
- For Unbelievers: The soul enters a state of conscious torment or a holding realm (such as Sheol or Hades) awaiting final judgment. (Note: Some Christian traditions, such as Seventh-day Adventism, teach that death is an unconscious sleep for all people until the resurrection).
2. The Return of Jesus Christ and Resurrection
- Christ returns to Earth in power and glory.
- The First Resurrection: Believers are raised with glorified, imperishable bodies that are reunited with their spirits.
- The Second Resurrection: Unbelievers are raised later for final accountability.
3. The Final Judgment
- All people face judgment.
- Believers are rewarded for their deeds in Christ, and unbelievers face the Great White Throne judgment, leading to the “second death” in the lake of fire.
4. The New Heavens and New Earth
- According to the Book of Revelation (Revelation 21:1), the old system of the earth and sky passes away, and God creates a “new heaven and a new earth”.
- God’s dwelling place comes down to be with humanity.
- The final state is not a disembodied floating existence in the clouds, but a restored, physical creation free from death, crying, pain, and evil, where God dwells with His people forever.
