God is to be worshipped in spirit and truth…. people in the bible that did not do this

The statement that God is to be worshipped in spirit and truth comes from John 4:24, where Jesus speaks to the Samaritan woman at the well.

Throughout the Bible, several figures and groups failed to worship God in this way—either through empty rituals, outward hypocrisy, unauthorized forms of worship, or chasing foreign idols.

Biblical Figures and Groups Who Failed in WorshipThe Israelites at Mount Sinai (The Golden Calf)What happened: While Moses was on the mountain receiving the Law, Aaron and the people grew restless and fashioned a golden calf to represent the God who brought them out of Egypt (Exodus 32).

Why it failed: They attempted to worship the true God through a physical, man-made image rather than in truth and obedience.

Nadab and Abihu

What happened: Aaron’s two sons offered “strange fire” or unauthorized fire before the Lord that He had not commanded (Leviticus 10:1-2).

Why it failed: They treated God’s sacred instructions casually and substituted their own methods instead of following God’s designated standard.

King SaulWhat happened: Saul took it upon himself to offer a burnt offering instead of waiting for the prophet Samuel (1 Samuel 13:9-14), and later kept spoils from Amalek under the guise of using them for sacrifice (1 Samuel 15).

Why it failed: Samuel famously rebuked him by noting that “to obey is better than sacrifice,” exposing a heart that valued political and ritual convenience over genuine submission (1 Samuel 15:22).

The Pharisees and Religious LeadersWhat happened: Jesus heavily condemned the scribes and Pharisees, quoting Isaiah: “This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me” (Matthew 15:7-9).Why it failed: Their worship was reduced to external displays, legalistic traditions, and self-righteous rules that lacked genuine spiritual reality or Love for God.

Ananias and SapphiraWhat happened: They sold a piece of property and publicly pretended to give all the proceeds to the church, while secretly keeping a portion back (Acts 5:1-11).

Why it failed: Their act of devotion was corrupted by deception, proving insincere and untruthful before God.

The Samaritans (Prior to Jesus’ Teaching)

What happened: The Samaritan woman at the well debated with Jesus over whether God should be worshipped on Mount Gerizim or in Jerusalem (John 4:20-22).

Why it failed: Jesus pointed out that they were worshipping in ignorance (“You worship what you do not know”) without alignment to God’s revealed truth.
