What Makes a Woman Godly According to the Bible

“Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight. For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to adorn themselves.” (1 Peter 3:3-5)

Peter is not condemning outward beauty; he is teaching that lasting beauty flows from a heart anchored in God. Biblical womanhood is not defined by appearance, marital status, motherhood, personality, or flawless performance. A godly woman is one whose identity rests in Christ and whose character is being shaped by the Holy Spirit. This passage speaks to every woman, regardless of background, age, or circumstances. The words the Apostle Peter wrote are a reminder that we have a God who searches and knows our hearts. And as believers, we want Him to be pleased with what He finds. God creates every woman with specific talents and abilities, as well as unique personalities. More importantly, within each woman’s heart, He plants a seed of faith and a deep need for Him. If we respond by inviting the Lord into our lives, He renews and shapes us.

This process truly brings out the best in us. But it doesn’t happen instantly. Becoming a godly woman is a lifelong journey – and we have an active part to play. It starts by learning more about what having this inner beauty looks like, and how we can live it out in our own lives.

Key Points

  • According to Scripture, a godly woman’s true beauty comes from a heart being shaped by God rather than from outward appearance alone.
  • Growing into godliness is a lifelong process rooted in humility, surrender, and dependence on the Holy Spirit.
  • Qualities such as love, kindness, faithfulness, wisdom, gentleness, and self-control help women reflect God’s character in everyday life.
  • A godly woman uses her words, work, relationships, gifts, and resources to build others up and honor God.
  • Her confidence and worth ultimately come from God, and keeping Him first enables her to live with purpose, serve faithfully, and continue growing in Christ.

What Does the Bible Say About a Godly Woman?

The Bible presents women as image-bearers of God whose worth comes from Him rather than from their appearance, roles, relationships, or accomplishments. Scripture reveals that God has always valued women. In 2 Corinthians 6:18, the Apostle Paul echoes a promise God spoke centuries before.

“‘I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.’”

Eve, the first woman God made, was brought to life with the holy purpose of reflecting His character to the world.

“So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” (Genesis 1:27)

Later, Immanuel – “God with us” – came to Earth, showing respect and inclusiveness toward women that confirmed their preciousness in God’s eyes. Jesus considered Martha and Mary of Bethesda as close friends. He took the time for the woman at the well (John 4:7-26), to bless the one who reached for His robe (Matthew 15:28), and to acknowledge Mary, who anointed His feet with oil (Luke 7:44-50).

Throughout the Bible, our Heavenly Father has provided insights about how His daughters can fulfill their original purpose. In fact, the Apostles’ letters in the New Testament contain practical advice for displaying Godliness in daily life.

“I also want women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God.” (1 Timothy 2:9-10)

“…that they may encourage the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, to be sensible, pure, workers at home, kind…” (Titus 2:4)

What Does It Mean to Be a Godly Woman?

A godly woman is a follower of Christ who depends on the Holy Spirit to form wisdom, love, courage, humility, and self-control within her. Living for the Lord starts with humility, recognizing His all-surpassing greatness, and admitting our “smallness” in comparison. It is His power that changes us, not our own strength. Next, we must submit ourselves to God, letting Him be the ruler of our lives. If we ask, our Heavenly Father will lead us into Christlikeness.

Godly women are committed to working with Him to develop good and righteous qualities. The Bible contains several passages that list these traits. The Lord has already planted them within us, with the expectation that they will mature over time. One of those sections is known as the fruit of the Spirit, found in the book of Galatians. Just reading the verses can set us on the path toward growth.

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” (Galatians 5:22-23)

Is Proverbs 31 a Checklist for Godly Women?

Proverbs 31:10–31 is a poetic portrait of wisdom and godly character, not a demand that every woman perform every task in every season of life. One of the biggest parts of our role as Godly women is to represent the Lord to others. What we do and say, as well as how we spend our time and energy, can actually point people to Him. Maybe the most famous portion of Scripture regarding women is Proverbs 31:12-32. Though written about a wife and mother, the verses can help all women learn how to represent God well in our “sphere of influence” and beyond.

Building others up.

  • “She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life. (v.12)
  • “Her husband is respected at the city gate, where he takes his seat among the elders of the land.” (v. 23)

This principle applies to all our relationships. Being supportive and encouraging has such a positive impact on how others feel, and allows God’s love to shine through us.

Seeking to honor God by where and how we work.

  • “She selects wool and flax and works with eager hands. She is like the merchant ships, bringing her food from afar. She gets up while it is still night; she provides food for her family and portions for her female servants.” (v. 13-5)
  • “She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.” (v. 27)
  • “She considers a field and buys it; out of her earnings she plants a vineyard. She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks. She sees that her trading is profitable, and her lamp does not go out at night. In her hand she holds the distaff and grasps the spindle with her fingers.” (v.16-19)

We all have different jobs and items on our daily to-do lists. Approaching our work with focus and excellence sets a higher standard and displays some of God’s creativity to our co-workers.

Carrying ourselves with God’s grace.

  • “She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.” (v. 25)
  • “She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.” (v. 26)

Scripture gives many cautions about using our words and actions well. Learning to listen before we speak and respond with good judgment gives others a glimpse of God’s discernment.

Giving care to our families and others.

  • “She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy. When it snows, she has no fear for her household; for all of them are clothed in scarlet.” (v. 20-21)
  • “She makes coverings for her bed…” (v. 22a)

Meeting the needs of our loved ones is a basic call for us. Reaching out into the community, or even around the world when we can, shows God’s goodness in action.

Knowing our worth comes from God.

  • “…she is clothed in fine linen and purple. (v. 22b)
  • “Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: ‘Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.’ ” (v. 28-29)
  • “Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.” (v. 31)

We need to keep a sense of how much God treasures us tucked into our hearts. Living with the knowledge that we are forgiven and fully loved by Him makes us more effective in ministry and shares the joy we have in the Lord.

We need to keep the Lord first in our life.

  • “Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.”(v. 30)

Above all else, we are to keep our eyes fixed on the Lord. Setting aside time for worship and prayer helps equip us to do His Will. Staying God-centered reminds those around us of His presence.

What Characteristics Do Godly Women in the Bible Display?

Women throughout Scripture demonstrate that godly character can include courage, honesty, faithfulness, trust, wisdom, leadership, and service. Through some of the women portrayed in the Bible, we can find more traits that set apart those who pursue living in a way that honors God.

Confidence in God.

  • Example: Deborah the Judge
  • The prophetess went into battle with the commander of Israel’s army, knowing that the Lord would deliver them. She expressed her joy of the outcome in this song:
  • “When you, Lord, went out from Seir, when you marched from the land of Edom, the earth shook, the heavens poured, the clouds poured down water. The mountains quaked before the Lord, the One of Sinai, before the Lord, the God of Israel.” (Judges 5:4-5)

Honesty with God about our struggles and cares

Example: Hannah

One of the wives of a loving husband, Hannah had been tormented for years by the fact that she was barren. She poured out her heart before God in the temple, lifting up prayers for a child. Even when Eli the priest didn’t understand her, Hannah humbly sought the Lord’s comfort.

“In her deep anguish Hannah prayed to the Lord, weeping bitterly. And she made a vow, saying, “Lord Almighty, if you will only look on your servant’s misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the Lord for all the days of his life…So in the course of time Hannah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel, saying, “Because I asked the Lord for him.” (1 Samuel 19:10-11,20)

Faithfulness to follow God

  • Example: Ruth
  • After her husband’s death, the young widow chose to go and live with her mother-in-law rather than return to her own family. He devotion to Naomi and the Lord shines through her words:
  • “‘Don’t urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord deal with me, be it ever so severely, if even death separates you and me.’ (Ruth 31:16-17)

Trust in God.

  • Example: Mary, Mother of Jesus
  • While only a teenager, Mary was given the wondrous news that she was pregnant with God’s Son. Her response was quiet but sure.
  • “‘I am the Lord’s servant,’ Mary answered. ‘May your word to me be fulfilled.’ Then the angel left her.” (Luke 1:38)

Passion to serve God.

  • Priscilla, Lydia, Demarius, and others used their talents and treasure to support the Apostles. Priscilla mentored new Christians alongside her husband. Lydia was a merchant and hosted the first Christian church in Greece in her home. Demarius did evangelism and other work among the churches in Athens. They knew the importance of the mission God had and gave themselves over to the work.
  • “Greet Priscilla and Aquila, my co-workers in Christ Jesus.” (Romans 16:3)

A Prayer to Grow as a Godly Woman

Heavenly Father,
How wonderful to be called Your daughter! Seeing myself that way changes how I look at myself, and how I want to live my life. Please develop those qualities that will help me to look more like You. I give You permission to weed out any traits that are keeping me in a more “worldly” condition and less than You call me to be. I pray that I will reflect Your truth and light to others as I go through each day. I know I will never reach perfection here, but I want to continue growing.
In Jesus’ Name.
Amen.

Being a Godly woman will look a little different for each one of us. But this quote from speaker and author Susan Hunt gives a simple yet powerful description of the journey we are all invited to take with the Lord. “When a woman is absorbed with God’s glory, she will interpret her life according to His Truth.”

Frequently Asked Questions About Becoming a Godly Woman

  • Does Proverbs 31 describe a perfect woman?
No. Proverbs 31:10–31 is a poetic portrait of wisdom, diligence, courage, generosity, and devotion to God. It is meant to honor godly character, not create an impossible checklist against which every woman must measure her worth.
  • Can a single woman or a woman without children be a godly woman?
Yes. A woman’s godliness is not determined by her marital status, motherhood, career, personality, or domestic abilities. Godly character grows from her relationship with Christ and the Holy Spirit’s transforming work within her.
  • Does having a gentle and quiet spirit mean a woman should never speak up?
No. A gentle and quiet spirit describes inner steadiness and trust in God, not silence, timidity, or passivity. Women such as Deborah, Abigail, Esther, Priscilla, and Mary Magdalene demonstrated courage and spoke or acted faithfully when circumstances required it.
  • How can I become a godly woman without turning faith into a checklist?
Begin with your relationship with Christ rather than a list of achievements. Spend time in Scripture and prayer, remain responsive to the Holy Spirit, and practice obedience one decision at a time. Spiritual growth is not flawless performance but an ongoing life of repentance, grace, and faithful dependence on God.
