Proverbs 22:8–9 contrasts the consequences of living with injustice versus living with generosity.
Text of the Verses (NIV)
- Verse 8: “Whoever sows injustice reaps calamity, and the rod they wield in fury will be broken.”
- Verse 9: “The generous will themselves be blessed, for they share their food with the poor.”
Meaning and Context
- Sowing and Reaping (Verse 8): Actions have natural and moral consequences. People who mistreat others or act out of anger and abuse of power (represented by “the rod they wield in fury”) will eventually see their control or oppression collapse.
- Generosity and Blessing (Verse 9): Kindness toward those in need brings a positive return. Having a “generous eye” (or open hand) means looking out for the welfare of the poor and sharing what you have rather than hoarding wealth or status.
