As we head out, by God’s awesome grace…

Dear God, thank You for this new day and for the process of emptying that You’ve been doing in me. Your Word in Galatians 2:20 says, “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, Who Lovees me and gave Himself for me.” God, some of what I wanted for myself had to be burned on the altar, in prayer and in tears, and I’m learning that surrender isn’t loss, it’s making room for Your will instead of mine. Help me keep my eyes fixed on eternity instead of my own agenda. I want to live like someone who’s already died to self so that Christ can live fully through me. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Key Meanings & Context

  • Heavenly Citizenship: The Apostle Paul wrote this letter to believers in Philippi, which was a Roman colony. Because the Philippians valued their Roman status and rights, Paul used familiar civic language to show that their highest loyalty belongs to God’s kingdom rather than any earthly empire.
  • Active Waiting: Believers are called to live with an eternal perspective in the present, shaping their conduct, values, and choices to reflect their true home.
  • The Return of Christ: The verse points forward to the physical return of Jesus Christ from heaven, which is immediately followed in verse 21 by the transformation of believers’ bodies.

But our citizenship is in Heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.
